European Investment Bank intends to finance the construction of a new metro line in Barcelona. The total value of the project is EUR 5.95 billion of which the proposed EIB finance is EUR 740 million.
The project envisages the completion of the key central section of the new metro line L9. In addition, works to be executed on other sections will be identified. The project involves the construction of a 50 km metro line in the city.
Currently, the metro Line 9 is divided in two branches (Line 9 South and Line 9 North) and they will be connected by the construction of the central section.
In 2016, Barcelona opened the Line 9 Sud (19.6 km) that contributed to the increase of city’s metro network by 20%.
Barcelona has 8 lines of which five are conventional lines and three are automated, 156 stations and more than 140 trains running at peak times on working days. 25 per cent of the Barcelona metro is driverless.
