DB InfraGO AG awarded Implenia a EUR 200 million contract to build a section of the Nordmainische S-Bahn beneath central Frankfurt. The section will run underground from Konstablerwache in the city centre via the new Frankfurt (Main) Ost (tief) S-Bahn station to Fechenheim.

Implenia will complete detailed building design work by the end of 2025 and the construction work is expected to start in early 2026. It is expected that the work will be completed by 2031.
Implenia will build the initial “Trog” construction pit and the pit for the Frankfurt (Main) Ost (tief) underground S-Bahn station, as well as several auxiliary construction pits and associated civil engineering structures.
The company will also drill two tunnel tubes, each approximately 1.2 km long, using tunnel boring machines, and carry out extensive water management measures. Because the construction site is located in a densely populated inner-city area, and due to the requirements of modern, sustainable construction, a variety of special foundation services are needed. Implenia’s experts have also been asked to provide these.
“Maintaining and developing a functioning transport infrastructure is central to the sustainable development of our cities. I’m very pleased that Implenia, with its many years of experience and comprehensive expertise, can contribute to the improvement of public transport in the densely populated Rhine-Main region,” Edwin Scherer, Head Division Civil Engineering at Implenia, said.
The Nordmainische S-Bahn project involves the construction of two additional tracks between Frankfurt, Maintal and Hanau north of the Main. The line will connect Frankfurt’s eastern inner city, Maintal, and the western districts of Hanau directly to the Rhine-Main S-Bahn network. This makes it one of the most important rail expansion projects in the greater Frankfurt area. Some of the foundations for this are already in place, as this expansion of the rail network was considered early on in urban development and transport planning. For example, the tunnel branches for the North Main S-Bahn at Konstablerwache were already created during the construction of the Frankfurt S-Bahn tunnel. The construction of Nordmainische S-Bahn project is divided into Frankfurt, Maintal, and Hanau sections.
