PM inaugurates Indore’s first metro line

Indore Yellow Metro Line

India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, virtually inaugurated the first section of the Super Priority Corridor of the Indore Yellow Metro Line on 31 May 2025, during an official visit to the state of Madhya Pradesh.

Commercial transport services commenced on 1 June 2025 along the first 6 km stretch of the line, running from Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Terminal to Veerangana Jhalkari Bai Station, providing access through five new elevated stations.

The line is operated by Alstom-built Movia metro trains, featuring the latest generation of CBTC signalling systems to ensure safe and reliable service.
Alstom designed and manufactured these trains in India at its state-of-the-art facility in Savli, Gujarat.

The first trainset was produced in a record time of 14.5 months from the issuance of the Notice to Proceed (NTP), and was delivered to Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) in August 2023. These ultra-modern, lightweight trains will operate at a top speed of 80 km/h, with capacity for 50 seated and 300 standing passengers.

Upon completion, the line will span 31.5 km, served by 29 stations, from Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Terminal to the airport. The project is estimated at USD 1.4 billion.

The development of the Indore Yellow Metro Line forms part of the Prime Minister’s commitment to enhancing urban transport infrastructure, reducing traffic congestion and pollution, and providing a comfortable commuting experience. Over six million residents of the city are expected to benefit directly and indirectly from the Indore Metro project.

As part of a combined contract for both the Indore and Bhopal metro projects, Alstom’s scope includes the design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of 52 three-car standard-gauge Movia metro trainsets, along with 15 years of comprehensive FlexCare Perform maintenance services to ensure maximum fleet availability and reliability. Alstom is also supplying the latest generation of CBTC signalling, train control, and telecommunication systems, each with seven years of full maintenance support. A total of 25 three-car trainsets will operate on Indore’s metro line; to date, 14 have been delivered to Indore and 8 to the Bhopal Metro.

The Train Control and Management System (TCMS) has been adopted, incorporating an automatic track inspection system to enable accurate and high-speed data transmission. The highest standards of safety and security are maintained, including continuous CCTV surveillance and a direct communication channel between passengers, the train operator, and the control centre in case of emergencies. Intelligent CCTV features also support unattended object detection and empty train detection, including passenger counting for emergency evacuations. Trains are equipped with dedicated wheelchair spaces to ensure accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility.

The Indore Yellow Metro Line is the first of five metro corridors planned for construction, collectively covering a distance of 124 km.
