Hong Kong approves Tung Chung line expansion

Tung Chung line expansion MTR had secured the governmental approval to proceed with detailed planning and design of the Tung Chung line expansion project in Hong Kong.

The corporation has commenced procurement of the preliminary design.

The project consists of the construction of a new intermediate Tung Chung East station, the extension of the existing Tung Chung Line to a new terminal station at Tung Chung West and the Airport railway extended overrun tunnel. This is an eastward extension of the existing overrun tunnels from Hong Kong station. The latter facilitates an increase in the Tung Chung Line train frequency in the future. The construction is expected to commence in 2023.

The newly-added Tung Chung East station will be a key component of the transport infrastructure to support the Tung Chung New Town extension development in the Eastern part. Tung Chung West station, located west of the existing Yat Tung Estate, will serve incumbent residents and potential housing developments nearby, including the Tung Chung New Town Extension (West) planning areas.

“The Tung Chung Line extension project will benefit incumbent and future residents on North Lantau by improving the accessibility and providing railway connectivity to the core of Hong Kong. Together with the existing Tung Chung station, the three stations in Tung Chung will also form an important transport infrastructure serving the community of the expanded Tung Chung New Town with due consideration of Government’s land and housing supply programme,” said Jacob Kam, CEO of MTR Corporation.

The Tung Chung Line is one of the eleven rapid transit lines of the MTR system in Hong Kong. MTR is carrying out the construction of the Shatin – Central Link. The Tai Wai to Hung Hom section, known as Tuen Ma Line, was opened in February 2020 and is expected to be fully operational 2021. It will be followed by the Hung Hom – Admiralty section scheduled for opening in 2022.

MTR operates a 262.6-km railway network in Hong Kong that in 2019 carried over 1.9 billion passengers.
