US: Santa Clara Caltrain station to have improved access

03-st-claraThe Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has inaugurated the start of tunnel works for improved access to and from the Santa Clara Caltrain station. The new walkway will open to the public in the summer of 2017.
The plans foresee extending the station tunnel about 80 feet, running under three Union Pacific Railroad tracks.  In addition, a 250-foot open-air ramp will connect Brokaw Road to the tunnel structure improving access for pedestrians and cyclists to the Caltrain, ACE and Capital Corridor platform, and El Camino Real. The nearly USD 14 million dollar project will also feature close to 2 dozen mounted light fixtures to enhance safety.
“People are much more likely to use Caltrain and the other rail systems if they have a safe and easy way to get to the platform. The Santa Clara under crossing improvements are another example of how VTA is leading the way toward faster, more efficient, and more accessible mass transit,” said Supervisor Ken Yeager.
