US: Metra launches 2017 construction programme

Chicago’s commuter railway operator Metra and its partners announced the plans to begin projects that represent USD 216 million in infrastructure investments in 2017.
In addition to major projects to replace aging bridges on the UP North and Milwaukee West lines and construct new track segments on the UP West Line, the 2017 construction program also includes numerous smaller infrastructure improvement projects distributed across Metra’s 11 lines.
Construction work is expected to begin this week and continue through the fall, weather permitting.
“We’re extremely pleased that three very significant improvement projects are moving forward this year. We plan to take full advantage of the construction season by making improvements where we can with our limited funding. Our goal is to be as efficient as possible with the resources we have and limit the impact of construction activity on our customers,” Metra CEO Don Orseno said.
Metra’s programme involves station, track and bridges improvements, road crossing improvement as well as signaling and communications improvements.
