Two tenders for Sydney Metro’s twin tunnels

sydneyTwo tenders have been received for the construction of Sydney Metro’s new twin railway tunnels under Sydney Harbour and through the central business district (CBD).
The tenders, for the Tunnels, Stations and Excavations (TSE) contract, will be assessed over coming months.
 The two joint ventures are:
•    John Holland CPB Ghella Joint Venture, made up of John Holland , CPB Contractors and Ghella ;
•    Ferrovial, Acciona Ltd and BAM Joint Venture, made up of Ferrovial Agroman (Australia),  Acciona Infrastructure Australia and  BAM International Australia.

The new twin tunnels, which received formal planning approval, will move more people in an hour than the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Harbour Tunnel combined.
The first of five tunnel boring machines will be in the ground before the end of 2018 to deliver new twin railway tunnels from Chatswood to Sydenham, with Stage 2 set to open in 2024.
Tunnelling on Stage 1 of Sydney Metro finished in January last year, with services on track to start on Sydney Metro Northwest in the first half of 2019 with a new metro train every four minutes in the peak.
Stage 2 of Sydney Metro will extend metro rail from Sydney’s booming North West region, beneath Sydney Harbour, through new underground CBD stations and beyond to Bankstown.
The tunnelling contract is expected to be awarded around the middle of this year.
