Tender launched for Sydney Central Station underground concourse

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Transport and Infrastructure Minister Andrew Constance announced a new underground concourse at Central Station, the ‘Central Walk’. This will be built as a wide, accessible and modern pedestrian link from the new light rail stop to the new Sydney Metro platforms with direct access to existing suburban platforms.
The tender process to deliver the new Sydney Metro at Central Station, as well as Central Walk, started with expressions of interest called for the Central Station Main Works contract as part of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project. Central Walk will be delivered at the same time as the new Sydney Metro platforms to reduce disruptions to customers and provide better value for money.
A dedicated construction contract will be awarded for the Sydney Metro Central works – separate to the rest of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest Project to ensure a strong focus on the complex work required at Sydney’s busiest railway station. Community and industry feedback will be invited on Central Walk later this year. Construction on Central Walk is expected to start in 2018.
The main features of Central Walk include: a 19-metre wide tunnel from Chalmers Street, linking to new metro platforms under Central; new, easy access points to Sydney Trains platforms 16 to 23; escalators directly to suburban platforms for the first time; boosting capacity at Central to cater for the expected 66 per cent increase in daily customer demand.
