Sweden rail passenger operator, SJ, decided to initiate the acquisition process on the delivery of 30 high- trains capable to run at speeds of 250 km/h, valuated at SEK 5-6 billion (EUR 524– 630 million).
“The procurement decision is a milestone for our investment strategy. By acquiring new and modern trains, we will be able to meet the increasing demand in transport services, while providing our customers with a better travel experience. The new trains will provide better comfort, shorter travel time and increased punctuality and reliability,” Crister Fritzson, CEO of SJ said.
The new trains will gradually put into commercial operation starting 2021 and will run on Stockholm-Malmö route as well as to Norway and Denmark.
According to the specification, each train will have 350 seats and shall be based on proven technology and adapted to Nordic climate conditions. In addition, the company said that is focusing on intelligent trains in everything from maintenance and technical equipment to information to travelers.
SJ is implementing projects to modernise and renew its rolling stock fleet. Stadler Rail is modernising the X2000 high-speed train fleet, that it was introduced 25 years ago. Stadler Rail will perform the disassembly of the existing trains, the installation of the new equipment and the static commissioning of the vehicles at a new location in Sweden. This upgrade will significantly increase the reliability and availability of the trains. Furthermore, the X2000 will also be outfitted with a new passenger information system and will consume much less energy. In a second phase, SJ is planning to refurbish the interior of the trains. This phase will have its own separate tender. In 2018, SJ is launching an upgraded and fully-modernised version of this train.
