Siemens Mobility delivers full automation at key dutch freight hub

Siemens Mobility has completed the modernisation and automation of the Kijfhoek freight yard, the Netherlands’ largest rail freight facility, for infrastructure manager ProRail B.V. The upgraded site, located near Rotterdam, is now fully operational and equipped with an advanced yard management system that significantly enhances efficiency and reduces handling times.

Kijfhoek serves as a crucial link between the Port of Rotterdam and major industrial centres across Europe. The EUR 110 million project, awarded in 2021, was finalised in May 2025 and marks a major milestone in the digital transformation of European rail freight.

“With this modernisation, Kijfhoek is now faster, more efficient, and firmly established as a vital freight hub for the Port of Rotterdam and wider Europe. We thank Siemens Mobility for their collaborative and solution-focused approach,” Helga Cuijpers, Regional Director for Randstad South at ProRail, commented.

The automation is centred around Siemens Mobility’s Trackguard Cargo MSR32 system, which provides comprehensive yard control – including route and speed regulation, retarders, propelling systems, and radio-based integration for precision humping locomotive operations. The system optimises processes from train arrival and classification through to departure.

“This project sets a new benchmark for automated freight operations in Europe. Our Trackguard technology supports a safer, more efficient and sustainable cargo transport network. We are proud to continue our partnership with ProRail and strengthen the Netherlands’ role as a logistics leader,” Jens Nordmann, Head of Mainline at Siemens Mobility, said.

Covering 50 hectares, the Kijfhoek site includes 14 arrival tracks, 41 classification tracks, and 12 stabling tracks. The modernisation also comes with a 15-year maintenance agreement to ensure continued operational excellence and cost-efficiency over the long term.
