Russian dual system electric locomotives reach 1 million km milestone

02-rzdTwo EP20 Olympus electric locomotives (registered at the depot Moskwa-Sortirovochnaya), produced by Novocherkassk Electric Locomotive Building Plant (NEVZ), part of Transmashholding, have exceeded 1 million km in service. EP20 Olympus is a first Russian dual system electric locomotive capable to haul passenger trains at speeds of up to 200 km/h.
The EP20 locomotive is equipped with asynchronous traction drive based on IGBT transistors. The implemented technical solutions enable to reduce several times the scope of its maintenance, increase runs between repairs and ensure electric power savings. It was designed in the TRTrans Engineering Center established jointly by Transmashholding and its technological partner Alstom. The serial production of these locomotives has been carried out at NEVZ since 2012, and up to now 56 electric locos have been built. By 2020 RZD will be delivered 200 EP20 dual-system electric locomotives.
The EP20 electric locomotives are operated at five RZD Locomotive Departments: Moskovskaya, Gorkovskaya, Oktyabrskaya, North-Caucasus and South-Eastern.
