Russia: 10% increase in rail passengers in 1Q

According to the latest figures, in January-March 2017, RZD’s rail infrastructure carried 242.8 million passengers, an increase of 10.1% compared to January-March 2016. Long-distance passenger numbers rose slightly to 20.5 million passengers (+0.2%), while suburban passengers amounted to 222.4 million (+11.2%).
In the same period, passenger turnover decreased by 0.9% compared to the first quarter of the previous year and amounted to 23 billion passenger-km. Suburban commuter passenger turnover amounted to 6.81 billion passenger-km (+4.9%), while long-distance passenger turnover fell to 16.14 billion passenger-km (-3.1%).
88.8 million passengers were transported on RZD’s rail network in March 2017, 11.8% more than in March 2016. Suburban commuter passenger numbers amounted to 82 million (+12.9%), while long-distance passengers rose by 0.3% to 6.8 million.
Passenger turnover in March 2017 amounted to 7.7 billion passenger-kilometres, 1.4% less than in the same month of 2016. Suburban passenger turnover was 2.42 billion passenger-kilometres (+3.7%), while long-distance passenger turnover fell to 5.23 billion passenger kilometres (-3.7%).
