Pandrol has been awarded a contract by Alstom to supply its rail fastening systems for Line 18 of the Grand Paris Express – one of four new metro lines currently under construction as part of a major expansion of the Île-de-France network. The project is being managed by Société des grands projets.
Line 18, a transformative 35 km metro route through southwest Paris, will connect Versailles to Orly in just 30 minutes, providing improved transport links for both residents and visitors. Once complete, the automated line will feature 10 stations and modern trains capable of carrying up to 350 passengers.
Pandrol’s fastening systems are being deployed across key sections of the route, including a 14 km underground cut-and-cover segment and a 6.7 km elevated viaduct.
The SD (Safe Driven) fastening system was selected by Alstom, on behalf of the project authority, for installation on concrete sleepers. The system offers controlled clip guidance, lightweight components, and simplified installation to reduce logistics and handling costs.
A composite baseplate version of the SD system has been chosen for the viaduct section – marking the first time a composite baseplate has been used in a French metro project. For this segment, Pandrol is also supplying its SD-SEE direct fastening system, designed for ease of installation and long-term reliability.
“We’re proud to be playing a key role in the development of the Grand Paris Express project with our innovative rail fastening systems, ensuring a reliable and durable track infrastructure for metro line 18. Our rail fastening systems are designed to streamline installation and reduce maintenance and support the efficient construction of this transformative metro line,” Philippe Matuch, Sales Director France at Pandrol, said.
Pandrol is working in close collaboration with Alstom, the project’s general integrator, to ensure on-time delivery and integration of the systems. The first section of the line is scheduled to open in late 2026, with the second phase due in 2027. Full operations are expected by 2030.
Beyond improved mobility and connectivity, Line 18 is set to contribute to economic development and sustainability in the Paris region.
