Mercitalia to introduce direct service Milan-Northern Europe

Polo Mercitalia, the freight division of Italian rail group Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) will launch a new service from December 2017, connecting Milan and the surrounding area to Northern Europe. This will improve connections to Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands using the Rhine-Alpine Corridor and the new Gotthard base tunnel that has been open since December 2016.
“Departing from the Italian terminals of Milan Smistamento, Brescia and Piacenza, the trains will reach Northern Europe with a much higher speed and capillarity, in a complete break with the past and in line with Polo’s strategic and industrial goals. A commitment that will, over the next ten years, lead us to make more than 50% of our turnover with international activities,” said Marco Gosso, the managing director of Polo Mercitalia.
Polo Mercitalia has a turnover of €1 billion per year, employs 4,000 people and has a fleet of 600 locomotives and 26,000 wagons.
