Kolkata receives its first new metro train

Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), a public sector undertaking under the Indian Ministry of Defence, has delivered the first six-car metro train unit to Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL). The six-car units comprise two driving motor cars at each end, LED lighting for energy conservation and the latest train protection and control systems (CBTC). The carrying capacity of each six-car metro train is 2,068 passengers and it has a maximum operation speed capability of 80 kmph.
BEML won the contract for the supply of 84 standard gauge metro cars (14 trains) to KMRCL’s East-West Metro Line in an international competitive tender. The value of the contract is approx. Rs 9 billion (EUR 112.5 million). The state-of-the-art metro trains are indigenously designed, developed and manufactured by BEML.
