Kenya receives a new batch of freight rolling stock

CRRC delivered to Kenya Railways more new freight locomotives and wagons for rail freight operation on its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). The 18 freight locomotives and 60 wagons, along with the existing rolling stock fleet, will be put into operation by the end of this year on Mombasa – Nairobi line.
“We have been receiving the locomotives and other rolling stock units over the course of the year. Now we received additional freight locomotives and more importantly the X2k series wagons. These wagons will allow for double stacking of containers during transport services. This will enable us transport huge amounts of cargo on one train. This way the railway transport sector will play a big role in decongesting the Port of Mombasa and even the roads,” said Atanas Maina, Managing Director of Kenya Railways.
To date Kenya Railways has received 940 wagons out of the 1620 according to the contract. The passenger, freight and shunting locomotives, along with the passenger coaches, have all been delivered on order.
