Kansas: KCSA to acquire additional trams

The Kansas City Streetcar Authority (KCSA) received approval from City Council to purchase two additional trams for the existing downtown route. The City’s Transportation and Infrastructure Committee unanimously approved the purchase and acquisition plan for the additional tram vehicles.
The total purchase plan is USD 11.9 million, with tram costs at approximately USD 4.9 million apiece, in addition to costs for spare parts and inspection support. The purchase will use existing downtown Transportation Development District funds. The estimated time frame to build two trams is twenty-four months.
Currently, the KC Tram system has four trams vehicles, with a three-tram operation running seven days a week. Since opening day, nearly 2.4 million rides have been completed with daily average ridership at 5,700. This exceeds initial ridership forecasts of 2,700.
