Turkish Prime Minister, Binali Yıldırım, inaugurated the 17-km long extension of a metro line in the city of Izmir. The extension is located on the Southern Line of Izmir Metro, between Tepeköy and Selçuk, with an intermediate station at Sağlık.
Works amounted to TRY 300 million (USD 87 million) with 70% of funds being provided from the state budget.
Transport services are operated by IZBAN (responsible with the operation of light rail services in Izmir), held by TCDD Taşımacılık and Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, each with a 50% share.
Meanwhile, tests with one of the metro trains for Marmaray railway, that was temporarily transferred to Izmir, were also initiated. Istanbul Municipality announced that the majority of the 440 metro cars, built by Hyundai Rotem, will not be put into operation on Marmaray route until after the completion of the modernisation works at the suburban railway on the two sides of the Bosporus. These works are expected to be finalised in 2018.
Thus, if tests with the first Marmaray trains will be carried out successfully, then six trainsets will be transferred to Izmir Metro to increase transport capacity at peak hours.
