India: Northern Railway to eliminate unmanned level crossings

07-indiaWith the aim of eliminating unmanned level crossings, Northern Railway has a set a target of constructing 336 rail overbridges (ROB) and rail underbridges (RUB) in the current fiscal year 2016-2017.
“We had constructed 120 ROB/RUB at unmanned level crossings in the last financial year. This fiscal, our target is to construct 336 ROB/RUB, as preventing train accidents is our major thrust area,” Northern Railway General Manager A K Puthia said.
Besides measures to strengthen safety, Northern Railway has set a target of laying 296 km of new rail tracks as part of its capacity augmentation program. The railway branch will also develop various facilities, among which lifts and escalators, for passengers on the rail premises.
