India: metro project in Tiruchirapalli to be taken over by the Southern Railway

india_metrouThe Tiruchirapalli City Corporation has agreed to hand over the construction of the metro to the Southern Railway. The Tiruchirapalli authorities would pay the railway administration Rs 5.7 million (80 million euros) towards the cost of construction.
The Corporation had earlier approached Southern Railway seeking permission to construct the metro on its own. However, the railway administration presented the plan to construct the subway itself, considering the importance of carrying out the task without disturbing railway traffic.
