EU invested over EUR 200 mil. in Sighisoara-Coslariu rail line

The European Commission has announced that over 201 million euros has been invested in modernising the rail link between the towns of Sighisoara and Coslariu in the Romanian region of Transylvania. This section is part of the line that connects the city of Brasov, in the centre of the country, with the Hungarian border and it forms part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The sum comes from the Cohesion Fund.

Trains running on the renovated section will now be able to travel at a speed of 120 to 160 km/h, which will reduce the travel time between the two towns by half. The line passes through the counties of Mures, Sibiu and Alba, where the one million residents will benefit from this EU-financed project, which is due for completion in 2018.

“Investing in better rail connections in Romania is all about investing in the real economy of the region because it directly benefits both local businesses and tourism. Of course, by reducing the journey times and promoting a clean mode of travel, this project will also directly improve the quality of life of Romanian citizens,” Commissioner for Regional Policy, Corina Creţu, said.
