Egypt and France signed agreements on railway development

Egyptian Minister of Transport, Hesham Arafat, announced that France will be involved in country’s railway and metro projects, following the three Memoranda of Understanding signed on October 25. The documents were signed during the official visit of the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in France.
Under the agreement between SNCF and Egyptian Railways, Egypt will benefit from French expertise in areas of capacity building, risk assessment, and developing of the railway network. The President of SNCF, Guillaume Pepy, said that its company is keen to cooperate with Egypt on various development projects that will be implemented in the country in the next years.
According to Transport Ministry statements, Egypt will continue the cooperation with France on the development of Cairo Metro Line 3. This line connects Attaba in east-central Cairo with Abbasiya and Heliopolis. It will extend from the northwest of the Greater Cairo area at Imbaba district to the northeast serving Cairo International Airport.
Currently, Egypt is negotiating with France to finance the next phase of Cairo Metro Line 3, the minister said. In addition, there are ongoing negotiations with the French side to develop the high-capacity public transport network in Cairo, Alexandria and Mansoura, he said.
This year, the Minister of Transport announced that there are plans to invest EUR 14.4 billion in metro and railway development across the country, targeting the implementation of three new high-speed lines such as Luxor-Cairo, Luxor- Hurghada and Alexandria-Cairo.
