Eesti Raudtee suffers decrease in rail freight volumes

In the first two months of 2017, 2.3 million tons of freight were transported on the infrastructure of the Estonian railway infrastructure company Eesti Raudtee, which is 14.3% less than in the same period a year ago.

Shipment of fertilizers during the two-month period grew by 37% to 720,000 tons. The transport of oil and oil products declined by 56% to 610,000 tons, while oil shale shipments increased by 26% to 520,000 tons.

Transit shipments fell by 27.8% to 1.37 million tons and local shipments increased by 29% to 660,000 tons. Import and export shipments meanwhile decreased by 3.3% to 270,000 tons.

In February, rail freight volumes totaled 1.04 million tons, which is 10.9% less than in February 2016.
