EC approves financing for Bucharest metro extension

The European Commission approved the allocation of EUR 251.8 million from the Cohesion Fund for the extension of Bucharest Metro Line 5. When works will be completed, the new section will connect the west of the city to its centre, from Râul Doamnei to Eroilor Station, where the connection to line 1 and 3 is made. The line will have 7 km, 10 new stations and one depot. 64 thousand people living in Bucharest will benefit from this section. Passengers will travel between the two points of the city in less than 15 minutes. Works are expected to be completed in June 2018.
“Thanks to the European Commission, Bucharest will have a modern metro network. This will have a positive impact on the air quality in the city, but also on local companies, tourism and, of course, on the people who live in the districts served by metro lines”, declared Corina Cretu, European Commissioner for Regional Policy.
