Construction of the first station of Koralm line launched

Austrian Minister for Transport, Jörg Leichtfried, and ÖBB Chairman of the Board of Management, Andreas Matthä, launched the construction of West Styria station. Situated east of the Koralm tunnel, in Groß Sainkt Florian, southern Austria, this is the first new train station of the 130-km Koralm new line.
The construction works will take 5 years and will be completed at the end of 2022.
“On behalf of the Federal Government, ÖBB is constructing the new Koralmbahn. Together with Semmering base tunnel project, this new project will form the core of a new southern rail route and will provide a better accessibility,” Matthä said.
The new station will have 8 railway lines and, after the line will be put into operation, the station will accommodate intercity trains. The station will have 400 park & ride spaces, and will offer connection to bus transport and taxi services. In addition, the station will serve regional transport services from Wies-Eibiswald and Deutschlandsberg, and there will be short connecting line to the existing Graz – Vienna-Eibiswald line, operated by Graz-Köflacher Railway (GKB) rail operator. Offering improved connections, the travel time between Deutschlandsberg and Graz will be reduced from 40 minutes to 25 minutes.
Under the Koralm rail route, twelve stations and stops will be constructed and eleven stations were converted and modernised.
The 130 km Koralm line will connect Graz to Klagenfurt, the capital of the federal state of Carinthia in Austria and in August, the authorities decided to build a new 19 km section of the main line, on Graz- Werndorf route.
