Constanţa Seaport develops railway infrastructure

Constanţa Seaport is a strategic seaport for Romania and Europe as part of the central network of the European transport (Corridor IV, Corridor IX and Corridor VII – the Danube), enjoying a happy position at the junction of the commercial routes which link the landlocked countries in Central and Eastern Europe with the Transcaucasus, Central Asia and the Far East.

Constanţa Seaport is an important drive for  the Romanian and the European economies. Thus, the authorities have understood that the key to boosting the business environment, improving freight traffic and promoting a sustainable transport is quality infrastructure and that investments should be endorsed to projects aimed at facilitating access and delivering modern and sustainable infrastructure, reducing travel times and easing both railway and road traffic.
As the authorities have become aware of the importance of these factors, in May they adopted the Decision on the technical-economic indicators for investments in developing the railway capacity in the River-Maritime Sector of Constanţa Seaport with focus on the operative berths 86 – 103, which are currently served by a simple, non-electrified line.
“Constanţa Seaport counts for 300 km of railways and represent an efficient link on the Far East-Asia-Western Europe axis. As regards activity development, we have a new Master Plan and we are thus interested in investing in the development of the port railway system”, declared Mihai Gheorghiade, Deputy General Manager of Constanţa Maritime Ports Administration.
The project consists in the development of a systematized railway complex to deliver even services to operators. The first phase will include works on the railway lines that offer access to operators based on the traffic forecasts by 2020. They will be electrified and equipped with all the facilities necessary for an efficient and rapid transport. In May, the authorities signed the execution contract for works in the river-maritime area. Financed through the Sectoral Operating Programme – Transport, the contract is worth EUR 12.7 Million and will be finalized in 18 months. The existing line will be rehabilitated and another 2-km long parallel line will be built to make railway activities in the port more efficient.
The development of the project will help increase railway capacity for the transport of dry bulk goods from and to the river-maritime sector of the port, improve port transit on the TEN-T network, transfer bottlenecks caused by activity development and build a switch-yard in an area with enough space for new development projects.
The new Master Plan creates the right framework for the promotion and development of the port in 2014-2020 through the optimal planning of investments in the transport infrastructure triggering the elaboration of current analyses regarding port activities, the development of different drafts for strategies and the implementation of the development strategy.
