Chennai Metro orders 96 driverless metro cars

Alstom has been awarded a EUR 135 million contract by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to supply 96 Metropolis driverless metro cars for Phase II of the Chennai Metro. The contract includes the design, manufacture, supply, testing and commissioning of 32 trainsets (in three-car configurations), along with comprehensive maintenance for 15 years.

The 119-km Phase II network will include over 76 km of elevated track and 43 km underground, covering three main corridors and their interconnections. The new driverless trains will be manufactured entirely in India, in line with the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives. Design will take place at Alstom’s engineering centre in Bengaluru, while production will be carried out at its Sri City facility in Andhra Pradesh.

Each Metropolis trainset will carry up to 900 passengers and feature advanced safety and evacuation systems, including train-to-train and train-to-track evacuation capabilities. Designed for reliability, energy efficiency and passenger comfort, these trains will contribute to improving urban mobility for over 11 million people in Chennai.

“This new contract strengthens our long-standing partnership with CMRL and underscores Alstom’s continued commitment to modernising urban transit in India,” said Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India. “We’re proud to deliver safe, sustainable, and world-class rolling stock, fully designed and manufactured in India.”

Alstom is already producing 108 Metropolis driverless cars for Chennai Metro Phase II, linking Poonamallee Bypass to Light House via 30 stations. The company previously delivered 208 metro cars for Phase I and, in consortium with Larsen & Toubro, built track work across Corridors I and II.

With a footprint across several Indian cities, Alstom’s rolling stock powers metro systems in Delhi, Lucknow, Kochi, Mumbai, and in upcoming projects in Agra-Kanpur and Indore-Bhopal. Today, one in every three metro cars operating in India is made by Alstom.
