Cargounit, the largest rolling stock leasing company in Central and Eastern Europe, has announced the purchase of 22 new Vectron MS locomotives from Siemens Mobility. The announcement was made during the Transport & Logistics fair in Munich and marks another milestone in the company’s long-standing cooperation with Siemens.
The latest order includes 12 locomotives delivered under an existing framework agreement and 10 additional units co-financed through Poland’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (KPO), managed by the Centre for EU Transport Projects. The vehicles will be delivered between 2025 and 2026.
With this purchase, Cargounit becomes the largest owner of Siemens locomotives in Poland. Its total order of Siemens-built electric locomotives now stands at 106 units – including 88 Vectron MS and 18 Smartron locomotives. This figure could exceed 150 units in the coming years as the company continues to exercise its procurement options.
The Vectron MS locomotives are designed for versatile, cross-border freight and passenger operations across Europe. Each unit features a power output of 6.4 MW in AC mode and 6.0 MW in DC mode, and comes equipped with the latest European Train Control System (ETCS) Baseline 3. They will be certified for operation in Poland, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and several other European countries.
Cargounit CEO Łukasz Boroń noted that the investment reflects rising demand in the intermodal and passenger sectors, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe. “Vectron MS locomotives are reliable and meet our clients’ operational expectations, while our full-service leasing model ensures maximum fleet availability.”
Siemens Mobility praised the ongoing partnership, with regional CFO Michał Marciszewski highlighting Cargounit as a model of growth through proven, multi-system technology and long-term service support.
The cooperation between Cargounit and Siemens began in 2018 with a single locomotive and has grown steadily, reinforcing both companies’ roles in advancing sustainable and efficient European rail transport.
