Caltrain begins pre-construction work on electrification project

caltrainCaltrain will be performing pre-construction work within the Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project. Caltrain will be working on pre-construction activities in the field that include locating utilities, confirming soil conditions and testing cables
Once pre-construction is completed, the project team will start construction-related activities in spring/summer 2017.
In July, Caltrain approved the USD 1.25 billion contracts to begin work on its electrification project. The contract for design and construction of the corridor’s electrification infrastructure was awarded to Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. The contract for the manufacture of high-performance electric trains was awarded to Stadler US, Inc.
Caltrain’s Modernization Program includes the electrification of the San Francisco – San Jose existing corridor, the installation of the Communications Based Overlay Signal System Positive Train Control signaling of Diesel trains system and the replacement with electric ones. The first stage of the program requires investments of USD 1.76 billion, while the second one requires investments of USD 624 million.
The purchase of electric railcars is one of Caltrain’s most important projects and would replace 75% of the diesel vehicle fleet operating along the San Francisco – San Jose line.
The electrification project will reduce diesel emissions in this corridor by 96 percent by 2040, will allow Caltrain to provide more service to more stations, increasing ridership and providing faster service between San Francisco and San Jose.
