Bucharest citizens await the modernisation of the rail ring

The railway ring project in the Romanian capital is developed by the Romanian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (MTI) and includes the development of intermodal and passenger transfer points between operators CFR Călători, Metrorex and Bucharest Surface Transport Operator (RATB).

The first phase includes the mo-dernisation of the Romanian capital’s railway ring and of several railway stations, these works being due by the end of the year. The railway ring of Bucharest is part of the multimodal transport development projects in the Capital region. Interior repair and exterior building works will be carried out at the rail stations Pantelimon,Voluntari, Otopeni, București Vest, Vârteju, Mogoșoaia, Jilava, București Progresu, Berceni, Popești Leordeni, București Sud. The deadline for the finalization of works is 2012 and estimated costs amount to RON 1.24 Million. Tiberiu Moldovan, the Commercial Manager of Metrorex, present at the Conference “Railway passenger transport on the sustainable mobility agenda”, organised by Club Feroviar and the Romanian Railway Industry Association (AIF) at the end of March in Sibiu, presented several aspects on Bucharest railway ring modernisation project.
Thus, the total length of the railway ring is 74.4 km and has ten railway stations located on the railway ring and eight inside the ring. After the modernisation works, there will be 17 new stop points on the railway ring. Once modernised Bucharest Railway Ring will connect the existing and the future  underground network to the lines currently under construction. It will also connect them to the highway network, as well as to the national and county roads.
For a better connection, Metrorex considered the extension of the underground network to Otopeni stop point (the station from which trains leave to Otopeni Airport). Thus, 2.6 km of new underground line will be built (double the existing line) plus a 0.76-km section of existing underground line to be shifted. Also, four shifting platforms will be built (two for the shit to the railways and another two for the shift to Berceni 2 underground station).
The modernisation of the railway ring around Bucharest is also imposed by the mobility need of the citizens in Ilfov county. Thus, the study presented by the commercial manager of Metrorex shows that 40% of 36,886 citizens of the 256,150 inhabitants of Ilfov county represents the active population whose jobs oblige them to travel to work and back. The presented analysis estimated that 30% of the 36,886 active citizens will use the train for daily journeys, which means a potential figure of 11,066 passengers every day.
Ballast bed works for the rehabilitation of works are also envisaged including the line doubling on the simple line areas and the improvement of the route for adapting to speeds of 120 km/h. Also, superstructure works will include the rehabilitation of the existing lines and the doubling of lines in the areas of the line is simple, as well as the construction of a new bridge across  Dâmboviţa river.
The minimum necessary equipping of all stations and stop points will include two platforms of 60m x 3m, the footbridge for passing from one platform from another, elevators at every platform, rooms for passengers, waiting seats on each platform, bike racks on each platform, ticket vending machines, a passenger information system and a video survey system. According to the two project drafts, 15 Park&Ride facilities will be assembled, with 1,300 square meters for the assembly of a bus terminal (under the first variant) or the assembly of a bus station at the 0 floor of the terminals (according to the second variant).
