Vossloh’s Australian subsidiary, Austrak, will product and supply concrete ties to Rio Tinto mining project in Pilbara, North Western Australia. The order encompasses approximately 280,000 concrete ties which are expected to be delivered in 2020.
The ties are dedicated to Rio Tinto’s Koodaideri iron ore mining project in the Pilbara region. The project will include construction of an additional rail line to connect Koodaideri to Rio Tinto’s existing network. Production at the mine is planned to start in late 2021.
Austrak will perform the deliveries from a factory in Western Australia which will also serve as a production site for further upcoming mining projects in the Pilbara region with the potential to offer further growth opportunities for Vossloh in Australia.
In November 2018, Rio Tinto approved a USD 2.6 billion investment to the Koodaideri iron ore mine project which envisages the construction of a processing plant and infrastructure including a 166-km rail line connecting the mine to the existing network. Once complete, the mine will have an annual capacity of 43 million tonnes, underpinning production of the Pilbara Blend, Rio Tinto’s flagship iron ore product.
