Alstom has inaugurated its first service depot in Shu, Zhambyl region, Kazakhstan, marking the successful completion of the first of four service depots planned under the investment agreement signed between Alstom and the Government of Kazakhstan in November 2023.

The event organised on the territory of the new depot was attended by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Kazakhstan to France, Gulsara Arystankulova, KTZ management, Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Industry and Construction of the Republic of Kazakhstan, akimats of Zhambyl region and Shu town as well as other valued stakeholders.

“We are witnessing a significant event for Zhambyl Region. The opening of a new depot in Shu District will undoubtedly give strong momentum to the development of the country’s railway infrastructure and strengthen its transit potential,” said the Akim of Zhambyl region, Yerbol Shirakpayevich.

With a total investment of EUR 5.6 million, the service depot is the first facility of its kind built in Kazakhstan since 1988. It will play a crucial role in the maintenance of KZ4 and KZ8 electric locomotives operated by the national company Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), while creating 100 skilled jobs for local residents and contributing to the socio-economic development of the region.

“This inauguration is a landmark achievement, reflecting on our long-term partnership with KTZ and the pivotal role of Kazakhstan railroads in the development of the Middle Corridor. This new depot is a symbol of innovation, collaboration, and a testimony to our trust in Kazakhstan’s future as an investor,” said Jerome Boyet, Managing Director of Alstom in Western and Central Asia.

Since 2010, Alstom has engaged in a productive partnership with KTZ, establishing a robust industrial base manufacturing two types of locomotives in Kazakhstan with significant domestic value creation and employing over 1,200 professionals. Developing a service activity is the logical continuation of our investment in Kazakhstan and will help addressing national mobility needs and building a nationwide footprint.
