Afghanistan could secure rail connection with Europe

afghanistan-rail-connection-eu_railwayA railway line that should connect Afghanistan with Europe via Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey was opened, on December 8, on the Afghan territory. The first train journey was carried out on the Afganistan-Turkmenistan railway line.
The construction of the railway connecting Atamyrat in Turkmenistan, the Immamnazar border crossing point on the Turkmen-Afghan border, and Aqina in Afghanistan, has been underway since 2013. The ongoing project is considered a priority for the Afghan transport system, and has already been connected to the national rail network of Afghanistan, sputniknews.com informs.
The Afghan Public Works Minister Mahmoud Baligh said that the authorities in his country plan to build over 5,000 kilometres of railways in all possible directions with the neighbouring countries in the next decade.
The new railway connects the Afghan section of Akina-Andkhoy with Atamyrat-Imamnazar section in Turkmenistan and Panj district in Tajikistan. Two Gulistan and Imamnazar railway stations, two large bridges over the Turkmen Karakum canal are being built as part of the project.
The area is part of the transnational railway project along the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan route (TAT).
