Alstom opens new plant in Hornell, NY

Alstom has officially opened its state-of-the-art Plant 4 facility in Hornell, New York, marking a major step in reshoring stainless steel car body shell production to the United States. This USD 75 million investment reinforces Hornell’s position as the nation’s largest passenger train manufacturing site and a growing hub for rail excellence in New York’s Southern Tier.

The 135,000 sq ft Plant 4 in Hornell will initially manufacture 200 multilevel commuter rail cars for Chicago’s Metra. Previously produced in Brazil, the car body shells will now be built domestically, strengthening U.S. rail supply chains and supporting Alstom’s American manufacturing footprint.

“Plant 4 upholds our long-standing commitment to building trains in America,” said Michael Keroullé, President of Alstom Americas. “We’re not just manufacturing—we’re creating good jobs and supporting regional growth.”

The expansion is expected to create 258 new jobs while retaining 390 existing positions. Equipped with advanced automation and AI-driven welding robots, Plant 4 ensures precision manufacturing and enhanced production efficiency.

Federal and state partners supported the project through various grant and credit programmes. U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, Governor Kathy Hochul, and local officials praised the facility for revitalising manufacturing in the region and reinforcing New York’s leadership in rail innovation.

“We are reshoring good, union jobs and rebuilding Upstate, making New York the place where things get made and made well. I am committed to rebuilding New York’s manufacturing base, creating opportunity in every part of the state and ensuring the future is made right here at home,” Governor Hochul said.

The plant is dedicated to the late James W. Griffin, a longtime advocate for Hornell’s industrial development and its legacy in rail manufacturing.
