West Pomerania orders five additional hybrid trains

hybrid multiple units West Pomeranian Voivodeship has ordered five additional hybrid multiple units from Newag under the contract signed in July 2020 covering the delivery of two Impuls 2 hybrid trains with an option for 10 additional units.

PLN 100 million (EUR 21.39 million) is the value of the ordered trains bringing the total value of the contract to PLN 240 million (EUR 51.33 million).

The electric – diesel trains have already travelled over 500.000 km which proves that the units can operate on the Polish rail lines offering increased capacity and great comfort for passengers.

The trains are facilitating the train paths on the partially non-electrified routes offering increased flexibility and reliability.

The hybrid multiple units consist of four electric traction motors with a total power of 1600 kW and are also equipped with two internal diesel engines and power generators, which provides power to operate on the sections without an electric traction network.

Combining innovative technologies in the new Impuls hybrid train has resulted in a much wider functionality and range of the vehicle applications for train operators while also dramatically increasing comfort of travelling for passengers.

The train has passenger capacity of 302 people, including 150 in seats. In its design, special attention was paid to the safety and comfort of travel. The passenger space is equipped with a fire extinguishing system, information system for travellers, GPS monitoring system, as well as comfortable seats and luggage shelves. In addition, the vehicle has built-in bike hangers and ramps for the disabled.

The vehicles are equipped with the most modern traffic safety systems and can travel with a speed of 160 km/h in the electric mode and 120 km/h in the diesel mode.

The first Polish hybrid train has been unveiled in January 2021 at Szczecin Central station. Currently the West Pomeranian Voivodeship is operating the largest Impuls multiple unit fleet consisting of 42 trains manufactured by Newag at Nowy Sącz plant. From 2013 to 2018, the authorities acquired 40 EMUs of Impuls family which makes the region the most developed in terms of the new fleet of rail vehicles, as well as in terms of ensuring its integration.
