The Italian group Webuild has been awarded the contract to build section T1 of Rome’s metro line C, a project worth a total of EUR 776 million. The work will be carried out by the Metro C Consortium, led by Webuild together with Vianini Lavori, with Webuild’s share amounting to EUR 268 million.

The new section will connect the Clodio/Mazzini and Farnesina stations in the northern part of the Italian capital, helping to strengthen the public transport network in an area with high demand for urban mobility.

Continuity of works on Line C

The award of the contract for section T1 comes shortly after the opening in December of the Colosseo/Fori Imperiali and Porta Metronia stations, known as “archaeological stations,” which added approximately 3 km to the route and created a direct connection with Rome’s metro Line B.

This work represented one of the most complex stages of the project, carried out in an urban context that is extremely sensitive from an archaeological point of view.

According to Webuild, over 625,000 m³ of archaeological excavations were managed on the section of line C between Monte Compatri/Pantano and Clodio/Mazzini, with the construction sites becoming, in many cases, spaces for cultural enhancement, not just construction.

Section T1, integrated with T2 and the Tiber crossing

Section T1 will be built in an integrated manner with section T2, which is currently in the executive design phase. Section T2 includes the first underground crossing of the Tiber River on line C, one of the most difficult technical challenges of the project.

By awarding both sections to the same consortium, the authorities aim to avoid fragmentation of the works and ensure the continuity of mechanized excavations in the Farnesina–Piazza Venezia direction. In parallel, work on the Venezia station continues as part of the second macro-phase of construction.

Line C, a strategic project for Rome

Upon completion, Rome’s Metro Line C will have a total length of 29 km and will include 31 stations, from the eastern terminus of Monte Compatri/Pantano to Farnesina. To date, 24 stations have been completed, from the eastern outskirts to Colosseo/Fori Imperiali in the historic city center.

The project is considered one of the most important investments in urban public transport in Rome, with the aim of reducing road traffic, improving accessibility, and increasing the attractiveness of public transport in a city marked by significant historical and urban constraints.

A growing global portfolio

The award of section T1 of line C consolidates Webuild’s position in the urban transport infrastructure sector, with the group having built over 890 km of metro lines globally. Major projects currently underway include sections of the Grand Paris Express in France, lines 2 and 4 of the Lima metro, and the Sydney Metro.

In Italy, in addition to the work already completed on Rome’s Line C, Webuild is also involved in metro projects in Naples, while internationally the group has recently signed contracts to expand the metro networks in Riyadh and Naples.
