Webuild has signed a contract to design and build the first section of Naples Metro Line 10, a project valued at approximately EUR 660 million, which is part of a larger investment exceeding EUR 3.1 billion.
The new line is presented as one of the most important investments in sustainable mobility in southern Italy, set to connect the city center to the Naples-Afragola high-speed rail station in about 20 minutes.
Phase 1: 6.5 kilometers and seven stations
The contract now signed covers Phase 1A of Lot 1, which includes the construction of the first 6.5 kilometers of track and seven stations. Of these, three will be built entirely during this phase: Di Vittorio, Casoria Centro, and Afragola Centro.
Four other stations will be partially started in this phase: Casavatore San Pietro, Casoria Casavatore, Casoria Afragola, and Afragola Garibaldi.
According to the company, the consortium led by Webuild also holds exclusive rights to carry out additional works, which are still awaiting funding, that could raise the total value of Lot 1 to over 1.7 billion EUR.
A 14-kilometer line for the northeast of the city
Ultimately, Line 10 is expected to span 14 kilometers and have 12 stations, serving the northeastern area of the city of Naples and surrounding towns such as Afragola, Casoria, and Casavatore.
The project is intended for a densely populated urban area with over 650,000 residents and is presented as a sustainable alternative to road traffic.
During construction, the project is also expected to generate a direct economic impact. The first section of Lot 1 is estimated to create approximately 700 jobs, both direct and indirect, and this number could reach 1,500 upon completion of the entire project.
Direct connection to the high-speed network
One of the most important objectives of the new line is to better connect the city to the Napoli-Afragola station, one of the key hubs of the Italian high-speed network.
In the first phase of construction, the main interchange will be the Di Vittorio station, where the new line will connect to Lines 1 and 11, improving access to the city center and to Capodichino Airport.
Once the entire route is completed, the line will also provide additional connections at the Piazza Garibaldi transport hub, with Lines 1 and 2, the Circumvesuviana railway network, as well as national and regional rail services. A connection to regional lines is also planned at the Casoria-Afragola station, via the existing station.
1,000-space parking lot and urban regeneration
The full completion of Lot 1 will involve an additional 7.3 kilometers of track, five new stations, as well as the completion of the four stations started in Phase 1A.
Among the works considered strategic is the construction of a parking lot with approximately 1,000 spaces to serve the Napoli-Afragola station.
The project also includes the development of public spaces along the route and the creation of green areas in neighborhoods that until now have not benefited from metro infrastructure. This includes the Piazza Carlo III area in Naples, where the historic Real Albergo dei Poveri building is also being restored.
Webuild Strengthens Its Position in Southern Italy
Line 10 strengthens Webuild’s position in southern Italy, where the group is involved in 21 projects, with a total value of over EUR 16 billion.
According to the company, these projects currently involve 10,200 people, directly and indirectly, and have involved collaboration with 7,500 direct suppliers since operations began.
