Webuild wins contract to extend Rome’s Metro Line C

Rome’s Metro Line C is set to extend further through the Italian capital under a nearly EUR 2 billion contract awarded to a consortium led by Webuild and Vianini Lavori. The contract, commissioned by Roma Metropolitane on behalf of Roma Capitale, covers the design and construction of the T2 section of the line, with work scheduled to begin in January 2026 once the executive design is approved.

Webuild’s share of the contract amounts to EUR 673 million. The new 4-kilometre stretch will run from Venezia Station to Clodio/Mazzini, adding four new stations: Chiesa Nuova, San Pietro, Ottaviano (which will connect to Line A), and Clodio/Mazzini. The project poses one of the most complex underground engineering challenges in Rome, requiring the line to pass 25 metres beneath the Tiber River and through areas of significant archaeological sensitivity.

Two of the four new stations — Chiesa Nuova and San Pietro — will be archaeological stations. These will be built with designs that integrate Roman heritage and surrounding urban features. San Pietro Station, located within the gardens of Castel Sant’Angelo, will descend 48 metres, making it the deepest and one of the most visually significant stations in the network. Its design is being carefully planned to harmonise with the surrounding historic landmarks.

Chiesa Nuova Station will sit beneath the square that shares its name, near the Church of Santa Maria in Vallicella and the Oratorio dei Filippini — both renowned for their architectural and cultural value.

The construction will involve diaphragm walls reaching depths of around 90 metres, a technique that was successfully employed during the ongoing construction of Venezia Station. The T2 extension represents the next phase of a wider expansion of Metro Line C, which is ultimately planned to cover 26 kilometres and feature 29 stations, 22 of which are already operational.

Webuild is currently in the final testing phase of the San Giovanni–Colosseo/Fori Imperiali section, which includes the archaeological stations Porta Metronia and Colosseo/Fori Imperiali. These are expected to be delivered in September 2025.

Once complete, Line C will connect the southeastern suburbs of Rome with the northwest, improving urban mobility and helping to reduce congestion in the historic centre.
