Warsaw receives five bids in tender for new metro trains of over EUR 400 million

Warsaw Metro has opened the bids received from five rolling stock manufacturers for the biggest tender launched by the operator so far valuated at PLN 1.7 billion (EUR 401 million).

According to the tender, 37 six-car metro trains will be bought with the contract including an extension for an additional lot of eight metro trains, each featuring six cars as well.

Metro Warszawskie announced that according to the bids that have been submitted, Škoda Transportation- Škoda Vagonka’s bid had the lowest price of PLN 1.60 billion (EUR 379 million).

Another bid that was in the budget was submitted by Stadler Poland at a cost of PLN 1.65 billion (EUR 390 million).

The other three offers have been submitted by Alstom Konstal, Spanish manufacturer CAF and a consortium of Siemens Poland, Siemens Austria and Polish manufacturer Newag. Their bids ranged between PLN 1.79 billion (EUR 424 million) and PLN 2.2 billion (EUR 522 million).

Contract assignment criteria will consider the price (50%), energy consumption (24%), maintenance services (22%) and environmental factors (4%).

The delivery of the new vehicles will begin in 53 months after signing the contract. The winner of the tender will ensure the warranty of the vehicles for 36 months post-delivery.

Warsaw metros in a maintenance depot

At present, Warsaw Metro owns a fleet of 18 Metropolis metro trains (six cars each) delivered by Alstom, as well as 35 Inspiro metro trains (six cars each, as well) delivered by Siemens and Newag. The Polish operator’s rolling stock fleet also includes 22 six-car metro trains delivered by Russian manufacturer, Metrowagonmash.

Metro transport operator, Metro Warszawskie, has been trying to buy new metro vehicles for the past two years. These vehicles are expected to enter service on the two metro lines of the Polish capital. Metro Warszawskie’s plans also include the extension of metro Line 2 (therefore, requiring a larger rolling stock fleet), as well as the improvement of the range of services provided to passengers. Metro Warszawskie has also advanced the hypothesis of building a third metro line.

„The analysis of the submitted offers and their correctness is currently being carried out, thus, the procedures of selecting the winner are underway”, Metro Warszawskie specified for Railway PRO.
