Wabtec wins USD 670 million contract to modernize CSX fleet

US rail operator CSX has announced a USD 670 million agreement with Wabtec to extensively modernize its locomotive fleet through the purchase of new units, the modernization of existing locomotives, and the integration of advanced digital solutions.

The contract includes the delivery of 100 new Evolution Series locomotives, the modernization of 50 existing locomotives, and the implementation of a package of digital solutions and services designed to improve the operational efficiency and reliability of the CSX network.

New locomotives for operational efficiency and performance

The new Evolution Series locomotives are designed to support heavy and long-distance transport operations, offering improved energy efficiency, greater traction power, and increased reliability. According to the company, they will help reduce fuel consumption without compromising the performance required for freight operations.

“Our locomotive fleet is a fundamental element of a safe and reliable rail system. Modernizing these critical assets strengthens network performance and supports the level of service our customers expect,” said Mike Cory, executive vice president and chief operating officer of CSX.

Conversion of D9 locomotives from DC to AC traction

In addition to purchasing new locomotives, CSX will modernize part of its existing fleet by converting D9 locomotives from DC to AC traction.

The goal of this work is to extend the life of the locomotives, increase fleet standardization, and integrate advanced control and diagnostic technologies.

The modernization is expected to deliver additional benefits in terms of fuel efficiency, traction power, and operational reliability, which are essential for CSX’s extensive freight network.

Digital solutions for fuel optimization

The agreement also includes the implementation of digital capabilities designed to increase the efficiency of locomotive operations.

Both new and upgraded units will be equipped with Trip Optimizer with Smart Horsepower per Ton, a US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certified system designed to optimize locomotive power usage and reduce fuel consumption.

According to Wabtec, the integration of these digital solutions will enable continuous improvements in the energy performance and operational reliability of the CSX fleet.

“The CSX fleet modernization initiative underscores the company’s commitment to operational efficiency and providing reliable service to customers,” said Rogerio Mendonca, president of Wabtec’s Freight Equipment division.

He added that the partnership between the two companies supports CSX’s strategic approach to long-term locomotive fleet planning.

Delivery of the new Evolution Series locomotives is scheduled to begin later this year, while deliveries of the modernized locomotives are expected to begin in 2027.
