Vossloh to supply equipment for California high-speed railway

Vossloh has won a contract to supply infrastructure equipment for the California high-speed rail line, consisting of concrete sleepers and rail fastening systems.

The delivery is intended for the first section of the line currently under construction, which is 191.5 km (119 miles) long, and is valued at over USD 45 million.

The contract involves the delivery of 335,000 concrete sleepers, including rail fastening systems.

Specially designed infrastructure equipment

The sleepers will be manufactured at Vossloh’s plant in Pueblo, Colorado, and deliveries will begin in the third quarter of this year. The fastening systems are specially designed to meet the specific requirements of a high-speed line, ensuring high reliability, long service life, and low maintenance requirements.

“The California high-speed rail project is a landmark infrastructure initiative in the United States. We are proud to participate in this first project of its kind in the United States. It also serves as an important benchmark and foundation for other projects that are already in the planning stages. With this new contract, we will significantly increase the utilization of our capacities in the United States, following several quarters marked by lower demand,” said Oliver Schuster, CEO of Vossloh AG.

The California high-speed rail line is the first dedicated line in the United States built specifically for high-speed traffic, designed for speeds exceeding 350 km/h. It aims to connect the state’s major urban centers and provide a fast, reliable, and sustainable transportation alternative.

Work on the high-speed rail project continues, with 275 km (171 miles) currently in design and construction between Merced and Bakersfield. Nearly 129 km of track have already been completed, along with nearly 60 major structures fully built, and another 29 structures are under construction in Madera, Fresno, Kings, and Tulare counties.

The project is advancing statewide, with 745 km of the 795 km line between San Francisco and Los Angeles/Anaheim having received environmental approvals and being ready for construction.

Since construction began, the project has generated over 16,400 well-paying jobs, most of which have been filled by Central Valley residents. Up to 1,700 workers are on site daily at the high-speed rail construction sites.
