Vossloh has entered into a strategic partnership with Canadian company Athena Industrial Services to broaden the global reach of Athena’s Advanced Rail Condition Detection (ARCD) technology, a tool designed to autonomously identify broken rails and detect train presence in areas without traditional signalling.

Under the agreement, Vossloh will integrate the patented ARCD system into the Vossloh connect digital platform, expanding the suite of predictive maintenance and asset-monitoring tools available to infrastructure managers worldwide. ARCD, which has already seen more than 1,200 units deployed and has detected over 100 broken rails, is recognised for its data-driven approach to improving network safety, particularly in territories with limited signalling infrastructure.
“The ARCD system is especially designed for areas that do not have signals or train control, so-called Dark Territory,” said Eiro Issakidis-Brown, Head of Strategy at Athena Industrial. “With Vossloh connect, we can reach out further and give more railway operators access to this tool for enhanced rail safety.”
“Adding ARCD to our Vossloh connect ecosystem is a natural step in delivering smarter, safer, and more predictive rail infrastructure solutions to our customers globally,” added Pierre-Henri Bougeant, Head of Digitalization at Vossloh.
Vossloh connect provides digital tools for asset monitoring, track measurement and lifecycle management, supporting operators in adopting predictive maintenance strategies that reduce operational costs and extend the service life of critical rail components. The integration of ARCD further strengthens the platform’s safety capabilities, particularly on low-density or remote routes where timely detection of rail defects is essential.
