Ukrzaliznytsia and the Austrian manufacturer voestalpine Rail Technology GmbH have signed an agreement for the supply of an additional 10,000 tonnes of rails, ensuring a steady flow of materials for major repairs covering a further 80 km of track.

This has been made possible thanks to successful competitive tenders, in which reductions in the expected price delivered significant savings. These funds have been allocated to contracting the additional batch.
The new batch of rails will begin arriving after the completion of the main deliveries, from approximately May 2026.
The procurement is financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) under the ‘Emergency Support to Ukrainian Railways’ project. With this agreement included, the total volume of contracted supplies will amount to around 46,000 tonnes of rails, enabling the construction and repair of 358 km of track.
The contract was signed by Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, Chairman of the Board of Ukrzaliznytsia; Nadja Jungwirth, Managing Director of voestalpine Rail Technology GmbH; and Anna Barukhovych, Regional Sales Manager at voestalpine Rail Technology GmbH. The ceremony was also attended by Oleksii Baletsa, Deputy Minister for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine.

“Thanks to transparent competitive procurement and the support of our international partners, we have secured additional deliveries. This is an important signal for the company’s employees and associated industries, as it relates to restoring production capacity and safeguarding stable jobs,” said Oleksii Kuleba, Deputy Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine.
The additional rails will make it possible to complete major repairs, increase train speeds and expand the network’s capacity, which is essential for the stability of freight transport and the development of infrastructure.
Ukrzaliznytsia also has a contract with the French company Saarstahl Rail, which in January delivered more than 1,000 tonnes of rails under a contract for up to 19,000 tonnes. These are being used to build and repair 145 km of track on the routes connecting Kyiv with major cities such as Lviv, Odesa, Dnipro and Kharkiv.
