Vinci-Colas consortium wins rail contract in Chile

Dragados-Besalco consortium awarded a consortium of Vinci Construction, through its subsidiary ETF, and Colas a EUR 100 million contract for the construction of the second stretch of the Alameda–Melipilla railway line in Chile. The contract is split equally between ETF and Colas Rail.

Alameda–Melipilla railway

The contract involves three years of works, including in particular dismantling the existing track, providing the materials – track, sleepers, ballast and overhead lines – as well as the construction and commissioning of a new suburban railway line.

The works cover the second stretch of the Alameda–Melipilla line, spanning 21.5 km, including three new tracks equipped with overhead lines, two of which will serve exclusively for passenger travel and one for freight.

The Alameda–Melipilla railway project in Chile is a major initiative by the state railway company, EFE (Empresa de Ferrocarriles del Estado), to connect Santiago with the country’s southwest by upgrading existing lines and building new infrastructure. The project includes the construction of three new tracks for passenger and freight use, and will cut travel times by an hour for millions of passengers annually.

The project involves the implementation of a passenger rail transport service on a 61 km  distance between Melipilla and Estación Central, a major railway station and a commune in Santiago Metropolitan area. The existing railway line is used by freight trains and for its development, the project includes the construction of double-track electrified line between Alameda (Estación Central) and Malloco, and one electrified track between Malloco and Melipilla.

The project also includes the construction of 11 new stations, in addition to the existing Alameda terminal station, for passenger boarding, 20 grade-separated road crossings, 10 level crossings, 43 pedestrian overpasses, and 10 pedestrian level crossings associated with protected road level crossings with automated barriers. The railway corridor will be fully enclosed, and all civil works will be designed for universal accessibility.

The line will be used by 57 million passengers each year, cutting journey times by one hour.
