Vietnam plans a new fast rail connection with China

The authorities in Vietnam intend to build a new fast rail line which would connect the capital city of Hanoi to the northern border with China, Vietnam News Agency announced. The average speed for passenger trains is 160 km/h, while that of freight trains is 90 km/km.
The new standard gauge railway line will have a length of 391 km linking Phong city, Hanoi and Lao Cai province.
Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Ngoc Dong said that the line will play a key role in the socioeconomic development of the localities it runs through, including Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc, Hanoi, Hung Yen, Hai Duong and Hai Phong. It was also expected to improve Vietnam’s international transport connectivity and trade activity, particularly with China. He said that the Ministry of Transport was proactively negotiating with China to finalize plans to connect the two sides’ rail tracks so that the construction could start as soon as possible.
The new line will run parallel with the existing one, which has a speed average of 50 km/h.
