Viaduct contract signed for NSCR project in Philippines

North-South Commuter RailwayTaisei Corporation and the D.M. Consunji (DMCI) group awarded VSL International, a subsidiary of Bouygues Construction, the contract for the construction of a viaduct of the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) in Philippines.

The contract has a value of EUR 100 million and covers the precast and erection of the bridge segments. The 16 km – long of elevated viaduct forms part of the first phase of NSCR on Tutuban – Bocaue route totalling 38 km which are constructed by the DMCI joint venture.

VSL is responsible for constructing the superstructure, which involves the precast and erection of 4,810 precast segments in a dedicated precast yard of more than 8 hectares. 23 segment cells will be required to keep pace with the needs of the precast cycles. The viaduct deck will be constructed span by span, by using four launching girders at the same time, which will significantly reduce overall construction programme.

The project will create 500 jobs at peak periods and will be implemented within 30 months.

The North-South Commuter Railway, a new 148 – km – long transit line, will link New Clark City, in Tarlac province, to the city of Calamba City, in Laguna province.

The NSCR involves the construction of a 148 – km rail system and 36 stations running from New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac to Calamba, Laguna. The project involves two main sections. The 91-km elevated NSCR North phase links the northern Metro Manila and Central Luzon, while the 56 km NSCR South section will use the existing infrastructure which will be modernised, between Tutuban and Calamba.

The NSCR North will have 38 km between Tutuban in Manila and Malolos in Province of Bulacan. The 52 km-long Phase 2 of the project will run northwest from Manila’s northern suburb of Malolos to the Clark economic zone and Clark International Airport in Central Luzon. The system will also have connections with the existing railway lines and will ease road congestion, cut transport costs and boost the  economic activities. The new project will also promote and encourage a population shift from the capital to regional growth centres further north.
