UWC signs a new contract for timber flat cars

flat cars for timberUnited Wagon Company (UWC) and Lesresurs, a manufacturer of sawn timber, signed a contract for the supply of 70 flat cars for timber mounted on bogies with an axle load of 25 tonnes.

The freight cars are expected to be delivered in the second quarter of 2021.

The flat cars to be delivered to Lesresurs have an increased payload of 74 tonnes and a loading length of 40 ft (12.19m). The car’s outline is 1-Ta.

Owing to the increased height of the racks, the loading volume of the flat car is 122 m3. The side racks have a constant cross section, which significantly reduces the unused space during the transport of packaged goods and prevents them from damage in the course of loading and unloading operations.

The end wall design features improved strength. The holes in it provide more convenience in operation, in particular, during customs control of the cargo being transported. The structure of the centre sill and side beams enables convenient inspection, service and repair of brake equipment. The design of the car floor provides for convenient cleaning, prevents cargo residues from falling between the rails and has drainage holes to eliminate water.

A significant competitive advantage of the car is that it uses 18-9855 bogies. Compared to a standard bogie, the running gear of the Tikhvin flat car offers an increased axle load of 25 tonnes, high operational reliability, an improved design of bearing cast parts and a spring suspension system with wear-resistant elements. The flat car has maintenance intervals of 8 years, or up to 1 million km. The service life of the car is 40 years.

“Based on the company’s experience, we can safely say that such cars really have improved characteristics as they allow to preserve the integrity of the cargo and carry increased loads. These railcars get uncoupled for non-scheduled repairs many times less frequently than standard flat cars, while their operation provides much more economic benefits. This was the reason why we decided to once again turn to UWC for a new batch of timber flat cars,” the representatives of Lesresurs say.

UWC and Lesresurs are collaborating since 2019 when TikhvinSpetsMash delivered the company 50 flat cars for timber, that are operating as part of the Lesresurs fleet.
