UWC marks its 100,000th freight car manufactured at TVSZ

United Wagon Company has released the 100,000th freight car produced at the Tikhvin Freight Car (TVSZ) building plant, since January 2012. The milestone gondola car will be delivered to the State Transport Leasing Company as part of a contract to supply 20,000 gondola cars by the end of 2022.

The size of the fleet of new generation cars in operation on the 1520 mm railway area now stands at 150,000, or around 15% of the total fleet on the Russian Railways network, 65% of which is Tikhvin-produced rolling stock.

Since the mass production of Tikhvin cars began, the cars’ increased load capacity has contributed to an extra 22 million tonnes of freight of different types being transported across the Russian rail network, with over 18 million tonnes of coal, 2 million tonnes of grain and mineral fertilizers, and 1 million tonnes of metallurgical products and construction freight.

According to a report of INFOLine-Analytics, the cumulative effect on Russian GDP of using gondola cars with increased load capacity since 2013 is forecast to reach RUB 200 billion (USD 3.17 billion) by the end of 2019, with that figure rising to RUB 1 trillion (USD 15.9 billion) by the end of 2025.

“Innovative cars produced by UWC have shown excellent results in the transport of various types of freight, ensuring a high degree of efficiency and safety in rail transport. Our aim today is to ensure the implementation of the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation on increasing the carrying capacity of the Russian rail network, as well as increasing exports of high-tech products. The Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade is counting on UWC’s potential and is willing to provide support so that it can achieve its objectives,” the Russian Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Alexander Morozov, said.

Since 2012, Tikhvin’s production operation has had an eventful path of development. Following the launch of the Tikhvin Freight Car Building Plant, where the new generation of all-purpose rolling stock is being produced, the TikhvinChemMash enterprise was commissioned in 2015 for the production of tank cars, and in 2016 the first batch of specialized cars came off the production line at TikhvinSpetsMash. A car repair enterprise is in operation at the Titran-Express Tihvin assembly plant, while the Timken UWC joint enterprise is home to a batch production operation for cassette bearings.
