US: MARTA offers free Wi-Fi on trains

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) now has free Wi-Fi on all buses and trains. The new connection allows riders to browse the web, send e-mails, read e-books, and connect to social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Wi-Fi Lite relies on cellular-based technology and speeds vary throughout the route. Downloading large files or streaming video is prohibited due to limited bandwidth. In order to access the Wi-Fi connection, passengers must select the network name based on their rail car number or bus. If they move from one mode of transportation to another or from one railcar to another, the passengers need to re-open their settings and select the proper Wi-Fi network.

MARTA is also expanding Wi-Fi and cellular services to include all 38 rail stations. Installation has been completed at Five Points, Peachtree Center, and Dome Stations. MARTA Mobility vehicles will have access by mid-year.
