US companies interested in Ukraine’s rail projects

During a meeting with Greenbrier, Baron Services, Bechtel and Caterpillar, Ukraine’s Minister of Infrastructure, Volodymyr Omelyan, presented country’s projects on the modernisation and development of transport infrastructure where US companies can be involved.
Highlighting the railway development, the minister said that Bechtel can participate on the concession of railway stations and the construction of the Odessa-Kyiv high-speed rail. For Odessa-Kiev-Lviv HSR, the technical and economic documentation studies is carried out by Italferr
During a meeting with Niikolas Rautiola, Director, Global Aftermarket Sales of Caterpillar, the Minister said that his country is interested in attracting investments, including significant funds to renew Ukrzaliznytsya’s rolling stock within the next years. The representatives of Caterpillar expressed their interest in entering on the Ukrainian market not only as a manufacturer of locomotives, but also to provide a full range of special equipment.
Volodymyr Omelyan explained that Ukraine is taking all measures to create a competitive transport market, ensure equal access to infrastructure, implement innovative development models and attract investments.
According to the Ministry, the parties will cooperate to identify technical solutions for the modernization of locomotives operated by Ukrainian rail transport enterprises.
This year, Ukraine has adopted the national transport strategy called “Drive Ukraine 2030” under which it is expected to attract USD 60 billion investments to modernise and develop all transport modes. According to the strategy, by 2030, the authorities plan to 100% upgrade the rolling stock, envisaging the modernisation and acquisition of new locomotives, freight and passenger cars. For the railway infrastructure, it is planned to increase average speed of trains to 150 km/h, to electrify most important rail routes and to from a high-speed network between Kyiv and country’s important cities such as Odesa, Lviv, Kharkiv and Dnepr.
